Saturday 14th January – hike ***** Levington to Nacton – sunny :)
Feeling lucky to have survived the Friday the 13th non-weather event of snow, floods and gales (!) and with it a bit on the chilly side now for windsurfing, Mag and I decided to make the most of the winter sunshine. We packed a picnic and took our flask and pastries to Levington Marina where we had breakfast in the van. With the tide high we watched the many waders in what little mud there was left.
Then at 11:30 we wrapped up warm and headed along the muddy path to Levington creek - as pretty as ever. Sadly no deer were spotted but Mag soon heard Long tail tits in the trees at the creek and we had a good view of them and saw several Curlews :) We rounded the creek and rejoined the Orwell path. The tide was too high to walk on the foreshore, so we headed up the cliff and through the beautiful wood with stunning views over the river. At Nacton shore we sat on our favourite seat for a sandwich before carrying on inland to the bridleway back to the Levington/Nacton road seeing a Goldcrest up close:)
Reaching the road, we had to back track a little way to the Permissive tree lined path past private woods. This is a big shooting area and there are several hides and high seats for the hunters to see their prey! We detoured to the huge sequoia tree and got some large pine cones, scaring a buzzard away. Back on the track we passed open farmland with several Peacocks strutting about looking very strange because their beautiful feathers were nowhere to be seen – just white and grey plumage. We had to negotiate the boggy area leading past the fields containing a huge crop of parsley where we saw lots of deer hoof prints. The terrain then goes very hilly which is most unusual for Suffolk so we pushed on up the hills and through the little gate which leads to Levington village. We stopped to have a chat to the furriest ponies we have ever seen!! We followed the road to pretty Levington Church and stopped for a chocolate bar on the seat overlooking the Orwell, then back down to the creek and returned to the van.
What a top walk covering 6 miles being out nearly 4 hours seeing loads of birds and enjoying the wall to wall sunshine:)
